My take on work-life balance
In a few weeks we are hosting an "Ask Me Anything" with 2 of my newest franchise owners, Nicki and Adam. It's such a great chance to hear directly from them about their why, their goals for the business, and how they work together as a team (spoiler: they are awesome!)
In looking at some of the questions already submitted for them, I see a theme — people want to know each others' secrets for balancing a business with the "rest" of one's life.
Today I want to share 3 things I do to find work-life balance harmony.
Harmony = a pleasing arrangement of parts. Balance (everything being equally distributed) is bullshit.
1️⃣ Systems and habits
If you know me, you know that one of my favorite books is Atomic Habits. TL;DR = create systems that set you up for success in doing the things you know you need to do. Example = to drink a lot of water, I set it right on the counter every night next to my keys — ready to fill every morning. When it's not on the counter, I don't drink water. It's just that simple.
2️⃣ Selective ignorance
This is a real term I learned a few years ago that means you are selective about the information you take in and actively choose to ignore the rest. It's a lot of work to consume information and become "fluent" in everything. I will happily admit that I have no idea who certain celebrities/influencers are, I definitely have :::checks phone:::: 45 unread texts, and I'm sorry to the HOA in my neighborhood but I absolutely will not be attending any HOA meetings (or tbh even reading the meeting notes). I assume that when something deserves my full attention, it will knock on my door.
3️⃣ Rest if you must
If you read last week's email, one line in the poem was "rest if you must, but don't quit" — I'm not a fan of quitting but I am a huge fan of resting. This includes regrouping, reconnecting, deloading, and of course sleeping (my #1 priority in life!) If you go too hard for too long - the burnout is real (it's science!)
So this is why Founder Friday will be taking a short summer vacation after next Friday. Next week I'll share my "Summer Business Bucket List" — what I'll spend the rest of my summer doing to set us up for BIG (AND HARMONIOUS) rest of the year!
