The white girl edition…..
This message is important. It's the one where I remind you that I'm not just the Founder of DivaDance, but I'm the white Founder of DivaDance. ::::awkward pause:::::
Being the white Founder of a brand, company, community who is made up of people of every skin color, body type, background, and identity is a big responsibility that I take seriously. I have a responsibility to talk about race and not pretend like it doesn't exist. I have a responsibility to recognize my privilege as a white woman, and to strive to know better and do better.
While we might not always get it right, we aim to have diversity, equity, and inclusion as not a performative initiative at DivaDance, but a way of life. This month I'm asking our community, "How does Black History Month MOVE YOU?" Our class schedules across the company will highlight Black history through music and dance - you can take a class at a DivaDance near you and we'll donate to an amazing organization called Black Girl Ventures. Their purpose is to make entrepreneurship more accessible for Black and Brown women- through capital accessibility, educational programs, and community. I couldn't love this more!
I summed up my vision for Black History Month with this theme because when I think about being a guest of Black culture, I'm MOVED. I'm moved by Black Excellence. I'm moved by Black Girl Magic. I'm moved by Black Joy. But most of all - I'm moved by music and dance that derives from Black culture.
I'm moved that non-white people come to DivaDance.
I'm moved that non-white people feel like they belong at DivaDance.
I'm moved that non-white people want to do business with me.
I'm moved that white people and non-white people can co-exist at DivaDance because the power of music and dance brings all people together.
How does Black History Month MOVE YOU?
