Beyoncé's recipe for success....

Be honest, you thought I was going to be a one hit Founder Friday wonder didn't you?  No "Mambo Number 5" here - I'm back with another email!

Speaking of literally-not-a-one-hit-wonder.....I saw Beyoncé last night in Dallas. In between voguing to "Break My Soul" (give me alllll the 90s club vibes), watching Bey beam when her daughter Blue Ivy took the stage, and asking myself “could I pull off the over-the-knee-boot look” (I decided I cannot), I just kept thinking about the phrase on my most favorite workout tank top: Beyoncé wasn’t built in a day.

As a superstudent of Queen Bey (very different than being a superfan), I've observed many things about how she was, in fact, "built" - and what I try to carry with me in my business decisions and life. The biggest of which being self-control and operating knowing that your outcomes are a lagging measure of your habits.

I read a story about a journalist who brought treats to an interview with Beyoncé - who only ate ONE during the ENTIRE meeting. The journalist, shocked, ask her, "Who can only eat ONE square of a brownie!?" Beyoncé responded, “It’s part of my job.”  Mind.blown. Of course, Beyoncé can only eat one brownie.

As a mom, I tell my daughters "It's my job to keep you safe" - which sometimes means that "no you can't play with an actual knife" (cue toddler tantrum). As a franchise founder, it's my job to protect and build the value of the brand - which sometimes comes with hard decisions about owner selection, budget allocation, and no, we can't put the DivaDance logo on a bumper sticker (I'm a terrible driver).  As an entrepreneur, discipline means getting up earlier, staying up later, and saying NO to the figurative (and probably literal) brownies now, so that I can say yes yes yes to even more freedom, flexibility (and carbs) later.

So - in what you do, what is YOUR job? And what accompanying behaviors support this? .....Even if they take the Beyoncé-to-a-brownie type of discipline.
